Rishad Premji, one of the heirs to Azim Premji’s multi-billion dollar empire, was recently appointed as chief strategy officer for its flagship IT business.
The 33-year-old Rishad, widely perceived as Mr Premji’s successor at Wipro, will chart future growth strategies and help the company to achieve its vision.
Rishad in his new role will report to joint CEOs Suresh Vaswani and Girish Paranjpe.
There is been a lot of curiosity about this appointment, so NDTV’s Tuhina Pandey caught up with Rishad Premji's new boss Suresh Vaswani and discussed with him Rishad’s new role and whether it means succession is under progress at Wipro.
According to Vaswani, contrary to popular perception, the Premji surname had nothing to do with Rishad's elevation to the CSO spot.
“Rishad has experience in Bain, GE and has graduated from Harvard and has wide experience across the company. There were three candidates that we considered for the position and because he is a Premji we did a harder due diligence and he came out as the best candidate so we gave him the job,” said Vaswani.
But clearly Rishad Premji's appointment as chief strategy officer at Wipro is not a coincidence. He is being groomed for higher responsibilities.
"Every man has his aspirations and ambitions. And anyone in the company is willing to work hard he/she can achieve the limits within Wipro," Vaswani said.
The buzz is that Rishad Premji will find a berth on the Wipro board soon. Meanwhile Azim Premji is testing him with fire in different roles within the company so when the time comes he is an able inheritor of his almost 80 per cent stake in Wipro.
